It is not surprising that unusual stories happen at all major leagues in all types of sports. So we’re all silly, funny jelly blobs moving around this Earth. We’re all likely to hurt ourselves in some weird way at some point, even athletes. However, there appears to have been an unusually high number of freak injuries in baseball.
So, let’s take a look at the 10 most bizarre MLB stories of all time. The stories themselves aren’t particularly entertaining, but the way they happened was. I can assure you that you will be surprised by a few of them.
Sammy Sosa sneezes hard
It sounds strange, and it actually was. It happened in 2004, with Baltimore Orioles icon Sammy Sosa. Just at that point, he was already a member of the Chicago Cubs. The thing is, he sneezed so hard and so loudly that he managed to damage a tendon at the bottom of his spine. This is a really strange and rare thing.
Unfortunately, this resulted in him being placed on the disabled list. Sosa eventually needed an anesthetic to help with some back pain. Due to his very strong sneezing, he does not waste any more time. This is an example of something very strange, silly and innocent that could end up hurting someone, even if they are an athlete.
Glenalyn Hill smashes a glass table
Glenallen Hill was a baseball player who played for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1990. He pitched on the DL (Major League Baseball) for 15 days with bruises on the soles of his feet, the backs of his legs, and the insides of his feet. Elbows. Glenallen sustained this injury as a result of falling through a glass coffee table. One would wonder how Hill would hit a glass table?
The story is as strange, and perhaps funny, as the explanation. Hill was harassed by insects while having a nightmare. He wasn’t used to having nightmares, but that day, he had a terrible dream and ended up having an accident at the table. Weird, funny, but it ended up with some bruises.
Trevor Bauer’s right finger was cut off
Trevor Bauer’s start in the ALCS in 2016 was postponed after he injured his little thumb while repairing his drone. However, Bauer was “just doing his job”, “regular maintenance”, and again, he had no idea that what actually happened was truly disgusting. It’s something no one wants to watch.
The Major League Baseball player managed to cut his finger while trying to fix the drone. This is a strange incident, but it happens frequently in the United States. So it is worth using this incident as an example to be careful when repairing or playing with electronic equipment.
David Price and Joel Zumaya were injured while playing video games
Here are two different incidents that I group together because they are exactly the same. First up, we have David Price, who missed a game in 2018 due to recurrent strain pain. However, the reason for this has not been officially determined. But there were rumors at the time that Price’s video game lifestyle was bad. However, he seemed to be enjoying the game a lot at that moment.
Joel Zumaya was also undoubtedly injured by a computer game. In particular, shredding is extremely difficult in Guitar Hero. And then Zumaya had to sit out the ALCS due to illness. The injury caused the Tigers’ coaches to recognize him as “more suited to playing guitar than baseball to a major league pitcher.”
Will Smith tore his ACL
Will Smith (currently as a member of the Atlanta Braves) missed a major portion of 2016. He was with the Milwaukee Brewers while tearing his lateral ligament while taking off his sneakers. Will Smith stated that he was about to get ready to shower immediately after the match.
Then he would hop on one leg just to remove the shoe from the other leg. “I pulled the shoe hard and it stuck,” Smith explained. According to him, he said his knee jumped up and out. A ridiculous incident, but it can happen to anyone, even an athlete.
Matt Cain gets hurt while making a sandwich
Matt Cain was already on the DL for 15 days with a cut on the index finger on his right hand. He was still a very good hitter for the San Francisco Giants. Why does this happen? Matt Cain was actually in the Giants team cafeteria cooking a sandwich when his knife slipped. He actually tried to grab it, and eventually cut off his finger.
However, Cain was not brutal, as he cut the burger in half. Matt Cain is a posh man who was trying to cut his sandwich with elegance. “I tried to cut it up to make it into neat triangles,” Cain says. Since he was a high-class person, this sometimes required making sacrifices.
Steve Bartman incident
The plight of Chicago Cubs and Cubs fans is staggering. There has not been a World Series attendance since 1994 in Major League Baseball. So the team is currently competing in the 2003 National League Championship Series. The champion of this tournament will go to the World Series. However, the Marlins’ Luis Castillo suddenly appeared toward the benches with 4 outs left in Game 6.
This also includes the National League pennant on this line. However, the Cubs outfielder slid and appeared in position to make the save. It would put the Cubs just three points away from the World Series. However, that was not to be the case, as Cubs fans rallied for the goal. They were interfering with Alou and preventing the ball from being caught.
The match was canceled due to bees
The Colorado Rockies were hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks while the Bees were buzzing with pitcher Darren Oliver. The bees were trying to swarm on the coconut hairstyle gel. Because there were too many bees on the field, the game had to be stopped just after the fifth inning.
Sounds like a joke, doesn’t it? But it certainly wasn’t. This is because the match was already canceled due to the amount of bees that followed the player’s hair. Since many people suffer from allergies and bee stings can be dangerous, the event organizers decided to cancel the match to avoid problems and other incidents.
Bill Buckner’s mistake
This was a great baseball player who hit a 2700 bomb and set the slugging record in 1980. Buckner was an All-Star in 1985 and 1986 when he hit over 100 bases. He did it to help the Red Sox win the World Series in Baseball. However, the Red Sox had not won a World Series before selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1919.
So fans were excited for the favored Sox against the Mets. After Boston trailed in the series games 3 to 2. Buckner thus misfired a slow ball near first base that went straight between his legs. This actually enabled the Mets to win the game. But Boston lost Game 7, continuing the championship drought.
Marty Cordova falls asleep in his skin care mattress
You probably don’t know Marty Cordova very well. He was, however, a decent to good baseball player. Although it is perhaps better known for this strange disease. Cordova was listed every day in the medical record in 2002. This is because he took a nap in a tanning booth.
So he got some artificial waves to get that delicious orange peel and burn his forehead. However, his doctor recommended that he stay out of sunlight. But we can all agree that baseball is always played outside, often in the sun. So the sport has become very dangerous for the player. A simple nap ruined a career.
